Mission Vision
The Mathematics Department's vision is :
Mathematics for Life.
Its Mission is :
To nurture pupils to become effective & creative problem solver in applying mathematical knowledge & skills in a dynamic world
of modern technology
Key Programs For Each Level
Secondary 1 |
Authentic Problem Solving A non- pen and paper assessment programme revolving around the application of Science and Mathematics to create a bridge model in order to solve a real-world problem. The aim of the programme is to encourage self-directed and collaborative learning in our students, and to develop and assess their reasoning, solving and communication competencies.
Math Manipulative (For Sec 1 Express) A sequence of location-based Mathematical activities that are designed based on the mathematical manipulative to encourage collaborative learning among the students and to develop and assess their reasoning, solving and communication competencies.
Math Obstacle Course (For Sec 1 NA/NT) A sequence of location-based Mathematical activities designed to encourage collaborative learning and to develop and assess the students’ reasoning, solving and communication competencies.
Special Math Module I (For selected group of students) A programme that aims to stretch the cognitive and meta-cognitive skills of our high-ability students through learning to apply Polya’s Problem Solving strategies to higher-order mathematic problems beyond the curriculum syllabus. |
Secondary 2 |
Authentic Problem Solving (Applied Learning Programme) A non- pen and paper assessment programme that involves the students’ application of mathematics and scientific knowledge to create a solar car to solve a real-world problem. The aim of the programme is to encourage self-directed and collaborative learning in our students, and to develop and assess their reasoning, solving and communication competencies.
Lost In Algewood Tournament (For Sec 2 Express) An annual inter-house tournament based on a life-sized algebra board game “Lost in ALGEWOODS” to promote the love for algebra, strategic thinking, collaborative learning and class esprit de corp.
Alge-Miner (For Sec 2 NA/NT) A sequence of station based activities that allow every student to compete among themselves in a fun and safe environment and at the same time to also learn manipulating algebraic expressions.
ICAS Mathematics An international competition and assessment to test and challenge the mathematical skills of our students.
Special Math Module II (For selected group of students) A programme that aims to stretch the students’ mathematical thinking and technical ability in solving mathematical problems beyond the curriculum syllabus. This is a continuation of the Special Math Module I where students will strengthen their skills in applying Poly’s Problem Solving strategies. At the end of the programme the students will participate in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad competition (Junior category). |
Secondary 3 |
Mathematical Modelling (For Sec 3 Express) A non- pen and paper assessment module that requires our students to do problem solving through mathematical modeling of a given real life problem to develop and assess their reasoning, solving and communication competencies.
Financial Literacy Programme (For Sec 3 NA/NT) A programme to develop and enhance our students in their financial literacy. |
Secondary 4 |
Singapore Mathematics Olympiad An annual national competition to test and stretch the ingenuity of our high-ability students in mathematical problem solving. |
Highlights |
Honourable Mention in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad competition (Senior category) |
HIghlights for 2018
1. Mathepulative Programme 2018
The Mathematics Department held its annual Mathepulative programme for Secondary 1N1, 1N2 and 1T1 on 21 May 2018. The programme encourages students to work in their teams to develop thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills while learning and discussing Mathematical concepts. The programme is conducted through an Amazing Race styled concept where students are expected to move around the school premises to various stations to complete the activities presented to them.
2. International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2018
The Mathematics Department conducted the 2018 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Singapore for 27 selected Secondary 2 Express students on 24 July 2018. The ICAS is administered by the University of New South Wales (UNSW). It is part of the school’s Mathematics enrichment programme that is designed to interest, encourage, and develop students in their Mathematical abilities by exposing them to higher order thinking questions and content matter beyond their syllabus.
